Why ServiceNow releases are named after popular cities?

ServiceNow platform releases two new versions each year. ServiceNow places great importance on product updates. Since Summer 2007, the company has consistently released new and enhanced versions of its software. Originally, these updates were named based on the date of release. However, with the introduction of the Aspen update in 2011, a noticeable shift occurred. New ServiceNow versions have been named after notable cities and regions. A brief history of releases and their overview follows.

About the releases

In Aspen, released in December 2011, the focus was on ensuring a robust system wherein new project management templates, Gantt charts, and workflow timelines were also added as features. The Berlin update, released in July 2012reflected different management styles, like that of the Agile Methodology.

In February 2013, with the release of Calgary, a new collaboration workspace allowed users to track live tasks in an easy-to-navigate interface. The Dublin release in November 2013 enhanced the features introduced by Calgary. With the application creator tool receiving a welcome overhaul. Eureka, released in May 2014, came with a new demand management tool and facilities service automation.

Its goal was to manage all aspects of a business, not simply IT delivery. March 2015 came up with a game-changer upgrade Fuji. This release introduced a host of new applications to align with ServiceNow’s ‘five pillars of the service’ model. The five pillars-Service Taxonomy, Service Experience, Service Delivery, Service Assurance, and Service Analysis. Geneva offered native applications for Apple iOS and Apple Watch, a massive advance in making the platform genuinely remote, focusing on an improved UI.

The Naming Convention of the ServiceNow version releases

ServiceNow symbolizes an airplane as the carrier from one city to another. It writes land safely in (next release city) every release note/picture.

As mentioned, ServiceNow releases an upgrade every 6 months, or twice a year, and names them alphabetically. The cities are picked up from North America or South America to Europe and Asia. Helsinki was released, after which Istanbul did, followed by Jakarta, which is in Asia.

“The reason we pick the city names in the alphabet, we support our customers. Because it’s a multi-instance paradigm, n minus one and n minus two releases so when you make names of these cities.

Customers will have a conversation with me and say “CJ, we went to Helsinki, we’re upgrading to Istanbul, or we’re going to skip Istanbul and go straight to Jakarta,”_ CJ Desai, Chief Product Officer, ServiceNow.
